Alpine Ascent

Alpine Ascent was inspired by rides through the Italian Alps, where the road seems to weave naturally into the landscape. During long climbs, I would round a series of switchbacks, hear the distant sound of bells hanging from sheep and cattle, and suddenly find myself passing through a tiny mountain village that appeared almost untouched by time.

Many of these villages felt strangely quiet. The roads climbed directly through their centers, winding past stone walls, churches, homes, and flower boxes before continuing upward into the high pastures above. There were often few people in sight, yet the villages felt alive through their architecture, their history, and the distant sounds echoing from the mountainsides.

That experience became the foundation for this painting. Rather than focusing on a single rider, I wanted the road itself to become the subject. The switchbacks lead the viewer through the village and into the mountains beyond, inviting the eye to travel the same path a cyclist would follow during a long alpine ascent.

At 48 by 60 inches, Alpine Ascent became an exercise in patience. Individual houses evolved into small paintings of their own, each requiring separate attention to color, light, and detail. The process took approximately 75 hours to complete and marked a shift in my approach to painting. Rather than working faster, I found myself slowing down and spending more time exploring the character of every element within the scene.
